Our clinical laboratories offer numerous specialized laboratory services that include a wide range of advanced diagnostic testing using state-of-the-art technologies housed in the following sub-specialties:
The Anatomic Pathology Division offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services in Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology and Autopsy Pathology. These four main areas are supported by a variety of laboratories including Histology, Hematology, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics.
Focuses on the analysis of various markers in body fluids such as serum, plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. This laboratory employs a variety of techniques including technologically-advanced automated analyzers to accommodate high volume workload and complex testing methodologies. We conduct a number of specialized tests for confirmation of abnormal newborn screens.
CLIA-approved and CAP-certified, this lab performs more than 200,000 tests annually on blood and body fluids, including special tests such as cytochemistry staining and red blood cell osmotic fragility test. The coagulation section offers routine and special coagulation tests such as mixing study and inhibitor assays, von Willebrand antigen, ristocetin cofactor assay, and platelet function analysis. Routine urinalysis is also performed.
This lab supports the transfusion needs for a highly complex patient population (Hemolytic Auto Immune Disorders, ABO-incompatible heart transplants, patients placed on Emergency-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, ABO incompatible stem cell transplants, solid organ transplants, and level 1 trauma). It is FDA registered, and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and College of American Pathologists,
Lurie Children’s Blood Bank Laboratory and the American Red Cross established a Blue Tie Tag Program to provide better matching of red blood cells for Sickle Cell Disease patients, thereby reducing the number of adverse transfusion events.
This full service CLIA-approved, CAP-certified Microbiology Laboratory offers various infectious disease diagnostic assays for bacteria, viruses, mycobacteria and fungi. We perform tests for pathogen culture and identification
Point-of-care testing (POCT) is performed in inpatient and ambulatory units of Lurie Children’s, as well as several satellite locations. The type of POCT performed depends on the clinical needs of that specific area and includes waived and non-waived POCTs such as bedside glucose
The laboratory analyzes small molecules used in a variety of clinical applications including endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring, inborn errors of metabolism and kidney function. This laboratory also measures lead in whole blood.
This laboratory performs over 71,000 diagnostic tests each year covering the sub-specialties of primary immunodeficiency diseases, allergy and immunology, rheumatology, autoimmune and infectious-disease serology and hematologic malignancies.
The Genetics Laboratories offers cytogenetic, molecular and biochemical testing for the diagnosis of inherited disorders as well as providing cytogenetic and molecular testing for the identification and classification of hematopoietic and soft tissue malignancies. The Genetic Laboratories also offers consultative services for genetic testing to assure appropriate and cost effective laboratory test utilization.
