Michael Matters Foundation Supports Families of Brain Cancer Patients

Michael Matters Foundation Supports Families of Brain Cancer Patients

From diagnosis onward, there is no limit to the kinds of support that can benefit children with brain cancer and their families. At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, we are proud to provide state-of-the-art care for children with brain tumors as well as partner with organizations who offer all-encompassing support beyond the hospital for families during times of need.

Since partnering with Lurie Children’s  in 2016, the Michael Matters Foundation has generously given more than $20,000 to families of children who receive brain cancer care at the hospital. The foundation provides financial support to families of patients with brain cancer with the intent of eliminating stress and enabling them to better focus on one thing: their health and well-being. Across Chicagoland, the foundation has supported more than 130 families with grants to help cover the costs of housing, food, utilities, transportation and more during their child’s treatment.

Among those families is the Dennis family of Minooka, IL. In December 2016, just days after his first birthday, River Dennis (pictured) was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain tumor called Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT). His social worker, Katy Howe, recommended that the family apply for a grant through the Michael Matters Foundation to help offset some of the expenses connected to his treatment. River’s mother, Lucy, completed the grant application and learned shortly thereafter that her family would receive a generous donation to put toward their expenses.

“Having a child diagnosed with cancer is a financial struggle for any family,” Lucy said. “Our family could not be more grateful for organizations like The Michael Matters Foundation who help families like ours.”

“During such a stressful and emotional time, it is so meaningful to know that there are organizations like this awaiting with open arms to welcome these families and assure them they are not alone,” Katy said. “As a social worker, it is a deeply touching moment to inform the families I work with that there is help available to them and that we can partner together to alleviate some of their worries.”

Philanthropy helps us at Lurie Children’s to provide the best care possible to our kids while offering support to the families who love them. To our friends at the Michael Matters Foundation, thank you for helping to make our mission a reality in the lives of our patients and families.
